Celebrating 10 years of Starfruit Neptune!

This journey started for me back in 2014 when Microsoft ended support for Windows XP, and I started gushing over the new UI for Windows 8. That month, I took out a piece of paper and a set of colored pencils and doodled a design for a new start screen structured like the first start menu introduced in the release build of Windows 95. Unfortunately, I don't have that original drawing, but that is the gist of how 'Starfruit' was born.

Here is an interface mock-up I made using PowerPoint in 2019:

It sure is hard to thrive without Microsoft Powerpoint

Image
Since 2015, Microsoft PowerPoint has been my primary work horse for conceptualization. It has been able to serve all of my graphic design needs, that is, until Microsoft shoved a per-month paywall in front of it. Now I need to move on towards a future without it, and that is far easier said than done.   What did I use PowerPoint for? What didn't I use it for? With enough practice, it could be used to mock-up graphical user interfaces, and the opening credits for movies. Though this may nit have been its intended use, PowerPoint is great at more than just slideshows. I could rehearse timings and export my creations as video files that I could drop into a video-editing program of my choice: (PowerPoint) Below are a couple of examples of how I used PowerPoint in my movie making endeavors: July 20th Update: Now that PowerPoint is miraculously working on my computer again, I am back in business! One of the benefits of being a Columbia College student is that as long as I am a student, ...

What is Post-meta Pre-modernisim? Explained by AI.

Post-meta Pre-modernism: A New Cultural Paradigm for the 21st Century What is post-meta pre-modernism? How does it differ from modernism, postmodernism, and metamodernism? And why is it relevant for understanding the current cultural and social transformations that are taking place in the world today? In this essay, I will attempt to answer these questions and provide a brief overview of this emerging concept. Post-meta pre-modernism is a term that I propose to describe a new cultural sensibility that is emerging in the aftermath of metamodernism, which itself was a response to postmodernism. Post-meta pre-modernism is not a rejection of metamodernism, but rather a further development and refinement of it. It is also not a return to pre-modernism, but rather a creative integration of pre-modern, modern, postmodern, and metamodern elements. To understand post-meta pre-modernism, we need to first review the previous cultural paradigms that preceded it. Modernism was the dominant cultural...

How I survived kissing Taskade goodbye, Part 1

Image
It's been a long time coming. I was first introduced either in 2019 or 2020 to Taskade, a groundbreaking does-everything web app that positioned itself as the ultimate collaboration hub for budding startup companies. Taskade was basically Notion before Notion. Little did I realize then that the team of minds behind Taskade would soon make some big decisions about which new ground they wanted to break. As a subscriber to their newsletter, I would get weekly emails about ways to effectively organize information, and utilize this platform built by a band of starry-eyed dreamers as a second brain. If you look at some of their blog pages from circa 2022, I'm sure you can find more than one example of this idea being touted, and I assume based on what monster Taskade eventually grew into that the people making the big decisions at Taskade HQ may have taken those aspirations a little too literally, as did many, many  of their contemporaries. *sigh* To illustrate what I mean, it mig...
