Post-meta Pre-modernism: A New Cultural Paradigm for the 21st Century

What is post-meta pre-modernism? How does it differ from modernism, postmodernism, and metamodernism? And why is it relevant for understanding the current cultural and social transformations that are taking place in the world today? In this essay, I will attempt to answer these questions and provide a brief overview of this emerging concept.

Post-meta pre-modernism is a term that I propose to describe a new cultural sensibility that is emerging in the aftermath of metamodernism, which itself was a response to postmodernism. Post-meta pre-modernism is not a rejection of metamodernism, but rather a further development and refinement of it. It is also not a return to pre-modernism, but rather a creative integration of pre-modern, modern, postmodern, and metamodern elements.

To understand post-meta pre-modernism, we need to first review the previous cultural paradigms that preceded it. Modernism was the dominant cultural code that emerged during the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. It was characterized by a belief in reason, science, progress, individualism, and universal human rights. Modernism aimed to discover the objective truths about reality and society, and to use them to improve the human condition.

Postmodernism was a reaction against modernism that arose in the second half of the 20th century. It was characterized by a skepticism towards the claims of modernism, and a critique of its underlying assumptions and power structures. Postmodernism argued that there is no such thing as objective truth, but rather multiple perspectives and interpretations that are shaped by social and historical contexts. Postmodernism also challenged the grand narratives of modernism, such as capitalism, democracy, and humanism, and exposed their contradictions and limitations.

Metamodernism was a response to postmodernism that emerged in the late 20th and early 21st century. It was characterized by a recognition of the validity of both modernist and postmodernist insights, and a desire to overcome their polarities and paradoxes. Metamodernism proposed a new kind of synthesis that oscillated between modernist sincerity and postmodernist irony, between engagement and detachment, between optimism and pessimism. Metamodernism also sought to create a new kind of grand narrative that would be more inclusive, pluralistic, and dynamic than the ones offered by modernism or postmodernism.

Post-meta pre-modernism is the next step in this cultural evolution. It is characterized by a further integration of modernist, postmodernist, and metamodernist sensibilities with pre-modern ones. By pre-modern, I mean the cultural codes that existed before the rise of modernity, such as those based on myth, religion, tradition, ritual, community, and nature. Post-meta pre-modernism does not idealize or romanticize pre-modernity, but rather acknowledges its value and relevance for addressing some of the challenges and crises that we face today.

Post-meta pre-modernism is not a homogeneous or monolithic phenomenon, but rather a diverse and dynamic one. It manifests in various forms and expressions across different domains of culture and society. Some examples of post-meta pre-modernist trends are:

- The revival of interest in ancient wisdom traditions, such as Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sufism, Kabbalah, Shamanism, etc., as well as their adaptation and integration with contemporary psychology, science, art, and spirituality.

- The emergence of new forms of spirituality that are not based on dogma or doctrine, but rather on personal experience, intuition,

This essay itself is a reaction to Thomas Flight's video essay about the rise of meta-modernism in cinema.

Happy Memorial Day Everyone!
